Have you ever been laid on your bed in the dark of the night, plugged in to music? Have you ever been so touched by the sound, the instrumentals and every single progression that you are moved to tears by it? One thing about listening to a song with your earpiece or air pods is that you can hear every single magic made.
Sometimes, the sound you hear is more important than the lyrics; but great lyrics paired with the perfect sound and the unique voice of the artiste is what makes great music. So, the music industry would be totally incomplete without the individual called the sound engineer.
The sound engineer is also known as the audio engineer or recording engineer. They are responsible for helping the artiste produce a recording or a live performance. Their job is to adjust and balance the sound sources with the use of equalization, audio effects, dynamics processing, mixing, reproduction and reinforcement of sound.
They work with the artiste and the music producer in the recording studio. They focus on the technical aspect of recording, especially when the music producer is occupied with something else. They are in charge of setting the levels of the sound, placing of microphones and fix the pre-amp knobs. Yes, the sound engineer is the individual that sits majestically in front of a huge soundboard working with all that levers, dials, and panels.
The sound engineer is responsible for mixing chords and strings and even chants. It is their job to ensure that the sound syncs with the voice of the artiste and comes on at the right time. The requirement for the job is to acquire technical expertise for the operation of the equipment, be creative and be gifted with good ears for music. The ability to balance sensitivity and great emotions with electronics and music is the duty of the sound engineer.
They are also responsible for editing, mixing and mastering the track till it is as perfect as the artiste and the music producer want it to be.
The sound recorder does not only work in the music industry. The sound engineers are mainly for the entertainment industry. The sound engineers also produce sounds for movies, radio, video games, and television programs. Some sound engineers are also artistes.
However, a sound engineer can be a scientist who designs, develops and builds musical equipment and technology used for producing music. These are the individuals that can comfortably combine arts and technology.
Everyone can’t enter the music industry as a musician; that you have a great voice and a well-trained ear for music does not mean you are destined to be the next Johnny Drille. You could just be the next big sound engineer your world needs.
Now that harmattan has gone again, I hope you brace yourself up for the next surprise weather. Stay jiggy fam!
