It’s a new month and it’s a Monday, so, let’s talk about money in the music industry. Performing Rights Organizations are also called PROs. Performing Rights Organization is the group that is in charge of royalties. They help song writers, and song publishers to get paid by collecting performance royalties. The music industry is a world of fair games too. There is an agency to ensure that every sector gets paid for their job. If you are being cheated in the music industry, it’s because you are ignorant.
More than the artiste getting famous and rich for a song, the songwriters and composers are to be treated decently. Many songwriters don’t understand how performance royalties work. A songwriter is meant to be paid performance royalty anytime the music is played on a TV show, a radio, used for commercials or even performed in a live concert.
But the question is; who is paying these performance royalties? People believe that the artiste or the record label will just pay the songwriter off and never hear from them again. Well, that could work because they are not the ones paying the performance royalties. The radio stations, the TV networks that play the song will pay the performance royalties. The payment is made to the Performing Rights Organizations who is in charge of distributing the money to their affiliated songwriters and publishers.
Performing Rights Organizations make sure their affiliated songwriters and publishers get paid when their songs are;
• Played on the radio,( both satellite and online radio)
• Played on TV shows and commercials
• Played on an online music streaming platform, like Spotify.
• Performed in a live concert
• Played in a restaurant or bar
It is impossible for a songwriter or a publisher to keep track of the stations and venues playing their songs. They need an ever-present hero and that hero is Performing Rights Organizations. It is the duty of the PROs to connect the publisher and songwriters to their money.
Different PROs have different system of payment for their affiliated artiste and songwriter but they ensure that they get the job done.
So, if you are a songwriter or a music publisher, I believe you should be swimming in money. There will be some radio, somewhere playing your song, your tune and you are not getting paid. You should get affiliated with a Performing Rights Organizations.
Lastly, it’s safe to say we have only scratched the surface when it comes to explaining what royalties are and how it impacts an artiste. But you should expect us to speak more on this going forward.
Keep doing music and of course, stay Jiggy while securing the bag👜
