It is another Monday, another good day to talk about what we all love. Only this time, it is twice the subject; music and food. Why pair music with food?
Amongst the finest things in life, you will find these two. They both explain and influence your mood. In fact, they are always there for you, even when you’re at your worst.
Now, we all know that your mood can influence your choice of music and food. When we are happy, we eat good food and eat like kings and queens while listening to the song that would break our waists. , When we are busy and serious, we take coffee and tea while listening to motivational songs. But when we are sad, we eat a lot of junks and listen to sad music. Yes, we know this. But what you may not know is that music can totally influence what and how you eat.
Studies show that music has a psychological and physiological effect on the food you eat. When you are at a party or at a gathering dancing to Fuji or Afro-pop, have you noticed that your choice of food is mostly snacks and other fatty foods? This is because the tempo and pitch and even the genre of music can influence eating behaviors and response to food.
There was a study carried out to test this theory some years back and the result was published in the Journal of Academy of Marketing Science. The investigators did a laboratory test in a Café. All they had to do was to play music and note what the costumers were buying. They shuffled low and high volume music using many genres like Rock, Pop, jazz, blues and soul. The tempo of the songs was dedicated to different days. They played soft music on Wednesdays and Loud music on Fridays.
The result showed that costumers ate unhealthy and fatty foods like; red meat, sandwiches, and cake on Fridays when they played the loud music. And Wednesdays had the healthy eaters. The researchers concluded that the result was expected because excitement or stress can cause one to pick an unhealthy diet.
I think it explains the correlation between ice cream, heartbreak and sad songs. Many people find comfort in this combination when they are trying to heal. It can be said that the song influenced the ice cream choice but it could also be influenced by the pain that you are going through.
However, this appears to be an advantage for the people who want to lose or gain weight. Hear me out; if you want to lose weight, you can use loud music to work out. It would stimulate your energy and your excitement to do more. Then for your healthy diet to make sense to you, slow music is the therapy. Then you can switch your slow music for loud music if you want to gain weight. When I said music has everything, I wasn’t playing. Music can change your lifestyle and in every article, I keep revealing it.
So today, test the music and food theory and let me hear the results. Stay happy, stay jiggy.
