It’s always exciting to talk about our musical gurus every Friday, its Artistes in focus. Before we introduce our artistes, let me welcome you into the New Year. I wish us all the best of life. As a New Year’s gift, our artistes in focus are; Adekunle Gold and Tiwa Savage. I feel very elated writing about these two. They have been serenading us with Afrobeats since the beginning of their career and it is just amazing to feature them on this one.
Before it became the the classic AG baby that we know now, his iconic slang was ”Oya now”. Adekunle Kosoko also known as Adekunle Gold is a graphic designer, a songwriter and a musician. His sound used to be more of Nigerian highlife music. This was because he developed interest in music while listening to songs by King Sunny Ade and Ebenezer Obey.
But now, Adekunle Gold is giving us more. From highlife, his genre has evolved into Afropop, and Afrosoul. The first music he used to announce his appearance to the industry was “Sade”.
“Sade” was a highlife cover of One Direction’s story of my life. He was also known for using his music to tell stories with melody. Nobody did the storytelling better than AG. In the same year he released “Sade”, 2015, he signed a record deal with
YBNL NATION. He later released his debut studio album Gold, which debuted at number 7 on the Billboard World Albums chart. He was releasing songs and getting featured by other artistes. After the expiry of his contract, he left YBNL NATION. Adekunle Gold unveiled his band “The 79th Element” in reference to the atomic number of gold. When he was not making music, AG was designing logos and graphics. He revealed that he designed YBNL NATION label’s official logo and completed other designs for Lil Kesh, Viktoh and Olamide.
After all, one of his first national recognition was as the King of Photoshop. He earned this name after he posted an edited photoshop image of him hugging Tiwa Savage on social media platforms.
Adekunle Gold released his latest album ‘Afro Pop Vol. 1’on 21 August 2020.
His growth is one of the best we’ve seen. In 5 years, Adekunle Gold became a successful musician, a husband to the talented Simi and a father.
Tiwatope Savage also prefers to refer to herself as Africans’ bad girl. She is a songwriter, a singer and an actress. She started her music career as early as 16 when she was in London. She was a backup singer for notable musicians like; as George Michael and Mary J. Blige.
She participated in the UK edition of The X Factor. In her passion for music, she graduated from Berklee College of Music. The queen was gaining grounds in London as she was signed into a publishing deal with Sony/ATV Music Publishing in 2009. In 2012, Savage moved back to Nigeria because she was inspired by the growth of the Nigerian music industry, and signed with Mavin Records. Her first appearance into the industry was with her debut studio album Once Upon a Time that was released on the 3rd of July 2013.
The album had seven singles; “Kele Kele Love”, “Love Me (3x)”, “Without My Heart”, “Ife Wa Gbona”, “Folarin”, “Olorun Mi” and “Eminado”. In 2014, the album was nominated for Best Album of the Year at the Nigeria Entertainment Awards and for Best R&B/Pop Album at The Headies.
She lived in London since she was 11 but she made Afro music amazing. Her genres of music are; Afrobeat, pop, R&B, hip pop, and soul.
Coming back to Nigeria was not a bad idea after all, she has won many awards and is also very relevant to the Nigerian Music Industry.
