When you have talent and the right amount of passion, you can make anything work out for you, and this doesn’t concern the amount of money you have in your pocket. The imagery and tone of voice you use in conveying yourself is what makes you stand out. In the spirit of Christmas, this week’s artistes in focus features two great talents; the colorful Dj Cuppy and Superboy Cheque.
Dj Cuppy
Florence Ifeoluwa Otedola, professionally known as Cuppy is a Nigerian disk jockey, producer and a remixer. She started her career in 2013.
In 2014 Dj Cuppy was the resident Dj at the Africa Music Awards in Durban. She later played at the Tatler Christie’s Art Ball in London,she also played at the financial times summit in Mexico City. She released House of Cuppy as a first compilation mix in London and Lagos in July 2014 and launched it in Lagos on September 2, 2014. She also launched the London based music management and content production business; Red velvet Music Group in 2014. She has produced EDM-esque remixes of song by leading Afro pop artists.
In March 2015, Cuppy was named the official Dj for the 2015 oil Barons charity in Dubai and became the first African act to perform at the event. She released House of Cuppy in June 2015.
She went on her first Dj Tour to 8 cities in Africa, titled “Cuppy takes Africa” in August 2015. She visited Nigeria,Senegal,Ghana,Kenya,Tanzania,Rwanda,Uganda,South Africa. The tour included performances,major artists collaborations and charitable engagements supported by GTB and the Dangote foundation. She interned at Jayz’s Roc nation later in 2015.
On March 24 2017, the two songs she produced “vibes” and “the way I am” were released and they appeared on the “Afrobeats” EP by Young paris. She released her first official single “Greenlight” which featured Nigerian singer Teckno on October 13,2017.
Till date she has released seven singles featuring different artists. Her single “Gelato” featuring Zlatan was a banger in 2019.
On August 24th, 2020 she unveiled her debut album original Copy.
She described her sound as “Neo Afrobeats” which is a fusion of Electro house and Afrobeats.
She has been open about her relationship and love life. She has dated high-profiled celebrities in the Nigerian entertainment and sports. She is an ambassador for Pepsi. she appeared in the Pepsi’s “# NaijaAllTheWay” all star commercial ahead of the 2018 World Cup.She was also announced as an ambassador for Global citizen Education and an ambassador Save the Children UK in 2018. It is also worth noting that she switched allegiance from Arsenal to Manchester United football club.
SUPERBOY CHEQUE
His full name is Akanbi Bamidele Brett. He is a Nigerian singer and rapper currently signed to Penthauze Records(phyno’s record label). He is better known as Superboy Cheque by his fans. He started his music Career in 2015 while still in University. He said he started music to reduce boredom.He was signed to penthauze records in February 2019 after he was discovered by phyno through one of his instagram freestyles. His stage name was formerly Kyle-B. His current stage name “Cheque” was inspired by his constant usage of the word mic check, and was the only stage name he has ever given himself. His first hit song “Nyem space” was released in March 2019. Later he released three singles; “Jekasoro” “pain away” and “ Abundance” under his record label in June 2019.The gifted artiste premiered a project titled “ Razor EP” a compilation of track hits which includes “loco” “zoom” “satisfied” “ Hollywood “ “ odun” in July 2020. The EP was rated top 5 Nigerian albums on iTunes within 24 hours of its release.
Cheque also featured in Olamide’s 2020 album “999” alongside Rhatti, Phyno, Snow, on a track that was titled “warlords”
Cheque has received numerous local awards,mostly during his days in Obafemi Awolowo university but it is satisfying to say that with the impression his music is making currently, it won’t be long before Superboy Cheque starts grabbing major laurels.
